    Hiring process?

Hi eveyone, about a month ago I went to Raleigh to take the correctional officer test at the Regional employment office. About a week ago I was notified that I passed the test and then was able to put my name on as many rosters as I wanted. I chose about 25 prisons and had my name put on their rosters across the state, mostly in the Western foothills, piedmont, and central regions. I was told that the next step was that a prison would contact me for an interview. When I gave my list of prisons the lady that I talked to made it seem like that it would not take long to get a call. Heard that the Doc needed to hire a lot of people. Just curious to see how much the DOC is hiring and what are the next steps of the hiring process. Like what is the physical exam consist of, heard it is not hard at all. Really looking forward to moving down but didnt know when to expect a call or letter in the mail. Any information on how much the DOC is hiring and the hiring process would be great. Thanks.

I wondering why you had to go to Raleigh for testing if you are in mountain/Piedmont area. Testing is normally handled at the Regional Office or Training Center, I know there is one in Lenoir in Caldwell County.

Now I don't know what's going on in the Western part of the state but we were called one by one into the Superintendent's Office today and asked if we were military veterans. The reason for that is a goon squad will be coming from Raleigh in the next two weeks and look into cutting positions. They are calling it a "Reduction In Force" basically it means possible lay offs.

I'm sure many of the cuts will come from eliminating vacant positions. I would hope that IF it is deemed necessary to lay off active employees they would have first choice in any open position anywhere in the state.
Lord knows I would LOVE to get the hell out of Eastern NC and back in the Hickory area.

transfer to AXCI, we have openings. not sure if we're actively hiring new hires because they've hired 10-15 in the past 3 months, including myself.

Wizard14, i have been going through the hiring process and started a few months ago and just graduated from BCOT today. if you put in for a lot of different facilities, you should get a call from a few for an interview. from my experience and what i've heard, some facilities are hiring because their # of CO's has fallen below the "critical level" so they get permission to hire, which is why me and the others got hired in the past few months.

you can PM me if you have anymore questions. good luck

    Re: Hiring process?

I am from out of state. I flew to Raleigh, NC to take the test because I filled out an application and that is the regional office that it went to. I talked to the Raleigh regional office and was told that they were looking to hire quite a few people and that they always have a continuous hiring. I looked at the DOC site and they have a recruitment thing and I also looked at the state website and it also says that there is a continuous hiring. I asked because I did not want to pay to travel if they werent hiring. Even when I got there to take the test I was told that the new budget for hiring would be known soon and because of the shortage of correctional officers, they were going to hire a bunch of people. I put my top 3 prisons down which were Central Prison, Forsyth Correctional, and Gaston Correctional. Then when I found out that I passed the test I e-mailed the Raleigh regional office and they called me the next day to take the list of the other 20 something prisons that I was interested in. When I gave the names of the prisons I was told that all of them were hiring and that my name would be put on the roster and I would be called for an interview. I was never told about them cutting positions or anything like that. Kinda frusterated because I wish they told me this before I paid to travel and I just talked to them last week and they said nothing to me about cutting jobs. Ill have to call them next week and see what is going on. Thank you for replying to me. If anyone hears anything and if they could let me know I would appreciate it.

ZMurphy- Alexander correctional is one of the prisons on my list. I was hoping if I put my name on quite a few rosters it would better my chance. Thank you.

Have you read the SBI report on the incident I think you are referring to? If not FYI the inmate was standing talking to staff and walked himself while being escorted to medical after he set his cell of fire. And was fine when he left AXCI, don't believe all you read in the paper.

I have been doing this a long time and I don't ever believe what an inmate says. Also especially what the newspapers print about an incident.

    thank you.

i know i have only just begun and have a lot to learn but my dad was a CO in NC for many years so i have been around it. just because something is in the newspaper doesn't mean its a bad facility or that the facility is constantly in the newspaper. the main push in the newspaper deal was/is his family not the inmate. he also caused an other incident where he got sprayed. not sure which facility but my instructors at Salemburg told us about it. all of the officers where cleared and the SBI/DOP admin complimented our staff on handling the incident by policy. btw that was the 3rd fire he started at the facility.
