New member! Greetings from Tucson! (BOP - FED CO Propect)

    Hey All!

I'm new to this forum! I'm a BOP Fed CO prospective (so I hope). I'm doing this because I'm tired if sitting in an office all day. I currently work for a tech company with the whole start up culture, but I need a career and not just a job. I recently applied for the BOP and selected FCC Tucson as my #1 preference (I currently live in Tucson, but willing to relocate if need be). I hope to kill two birds with one stone as I want to start my Fed time clock and begin a career in LE. I came to this forum to learn more, gain some insight and knowledge, etc.

I applied for BOP more than one month ago and still haven't heard back. I did take a proactive approached and reached out to the Consolidated Staffing Unit and the institution I'm interested in. Consolidated Staffing advised that they'll only review applications if the institution is in need and requests a roster of Best Qualified applicants. I've ensured I applied for both grades 5/6 positions as Best Qualified. FCC Tucson advised that they're currently processing applicants from September 2016 and do not foresee needing to request another certificate until some months within the new year. They said it's a little hard to gage as sometimes they're heavy with turnover and other times it's a little slow.

Now, would you guys recommend FCC Tucson? If not, any other institutions pulling rosters immediately? How long does this process usually take? I'd appreciate any info./guidance. I think this is great and I hope I get a chance to to communicate with many of you.

    Kind regards,

    Jesusonsky

    Greetings,

If you want to get into the BOP and relocating is not an issue, I would advise you check out institutions that are offering bonuses. Those are the ones that are in need.

    Greetings William!

    Thanks for the response!

I'll be honest with you, I didn't think anyone was going to respond as I saw the view numbers going up, but no replies. If you don't mind me asking, how can I verify and confirm what institutions are offering bonuses? This would be great!

Also, how does one just apply for all institutions? This is so you don't have to select a preference. Would you recommend this? I appreciate your attentiveness.

    Kind regards,

    Jesusonsky

Nothing against you personally but most of us (BOP anyway) have a wait and see attitude. Many many times (again nothing g again at you personally) we see folks announce their intention to get picked up by BOP but they are full of visions at grander, and some think they are either the smartest or most special person in the room. We have them sound d advise and what could happen hiring wise and hurt feelings came up (because they were special).

So several of us sort of wait it out to see which way the new guy goes.

That being g said you can apply open for anywhere (or you use to be able too) the downside you could get picked up anywhere.

So if there is a certian place I'd apt there and be patient. If it's an FCC they hire fairly frequently. If it is a homesteader old school stand alone FCI (like Texarkana for example) you might be in for a long wait.

    Hey there!

No offense taken at all! To be honest with you, I rather you all be straight forward as I like to be told as it is (really). I'd appreciate any advice from you guys because you guys are actually out there either employeed or retired with BOP.

Thank you very much for your response and insight. I liked what you said and I think it's best if I just wait. In the meantime, I'll also apply for one of my counties CO positions as they'll be opening up later this month. My goal is Fed CO, but county CO with the sheriffs dept. would also be great as I'd like to get into LE.

    Thanks again!

    Kind regards,

    Jesusonsky

    Hello Jesusonsky,

On usajobs.gov, on the Correctional Officer posting, it says on there that bonuses will be offered to these institutions, I believe it's Mendota, Victorville, and one more. When you apply, you can pick which institutions you want to go into. Just pick those and they should notify you right away. They did with me when I applied.

    Best regards,

    William

Two years ago I had a co-worker who really wanted to get into the Fed CO system but limited his application to a specific location in the town where I work. After a few certificates were filled without him being selected he applied to Victorville and was quickly selected. The bonus helped him with his move. Granted it was just him and his move was simple. No home to sell and everything in his car for the move. He sold what he didn't want to move. Now he has a couple of years of seniority (and pay) and is really enjoying the California life.

If you are mobile get your foot in the door and start our career.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Re: New member! Greetings from Tucson! (BOP - FED CO Propect)

    Hey!

I appreciate the information. I'll have to think really hard about this. I did forget to mention a few tiny details such as that I'm married and have a beautiful two year old daughter. My wife knows and supports my decision of joining BOP. However, I'm not so certain if she'd agree with my relocation ideas.

Looking at the recruitment incentives, it looks like it's only institutions in California. Any idea why this is? Are they so bad in California that the turnover is so high and no one wants to work there? Maybe they're that dangerous? I'm just wondering.

    Thanks again everyone for replying.

    Kind regards,

    Jesusonsky
