US eyes plan to empty Guantanamo prison:
Taken from: Yahoo / AFP news
The US government is developing a "long-range plan" to empty its war-on-terror prison at its naval base in Guantanamo, Cuba, and seeking help on what to do with inmates who won't be tried, The Washington Post reported Friday.
President George W. Bush's administration may ask Congress to "spell out procedures for scores of suspected terrorists whom the government does not plan to bring to trial," the report said, citing unnamed administration officials and others familiar with high-level White House talks on the thorny issue.
Last month the US Supreme Court ruled that inmates could challenge their detention in a civilian court. The US government had said it wanted to bring 60 to 80 Guantanamo detainees before military commissions, though only about 20 have so far been charged.

By Nicole Fuller | Sun reporter
July 2, 2008
A convicted murderer was given a second life sentence yesterday for stabbing three correctional officers in exchange for $1,000 and an ounce of marijuana from fellow inmates at the former Maryland House of Correction in Jessup.
An Anne Arundel County jury found Daniel Brigham, 30, guilty last year of attempted first-degree murder and other charges for stabbing a female corrections officer and two other officers who came to her aid Dec. 29, 2006.
The troubled facility was closed in March 2007.

Police killing suspect's jail death ruled homicide - Yahoo! News
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - The death of a 19-year-old found slumped in his cell a day after he was jailed on charges of running over and killing a police officer has been ruled a homicide, authorities said Monday.
The Maryland Medical Examiner ruled Monday that Ronnie White's death in Prince George's County Correctional Center the previous day was from asphyxiation and strangulation.
Maryland State Police and the FBI are investigating the death. The FBI is focusing on possible civil rights violations.
Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson said at a news conference Monday, "If we have vigilante justice, our society will fall apart."
Officials said seven guards had access to White at the time of his death, as did an unspecified number of... [Read More]

The Associated Press: Inmate takes 2 hostage at Maine prison
WARREN, Maine (AP) — The governor's office says two people have been taken hostage by a prisoner with a knife at the Maine State Prison in Warren.
Spokesman David Farmer says the standoff began Monday afternoon and that a negotiating team has made "limited contact" with the prisoner.
Farmer did not identify the prisoner or the hostages. He also didn't say if the hostages were other inmates or prison staff.
Warren is 58 miles northeast of Portland.

I hope this is resolved quickly and peacefully.
