Three top officials out in Illinois prisons shakeup

Three top officials at the Illinois Department of Corrections are out in a staff shakeup at the prisons agency.
Spokeswoman Sharyn Elman said today that Executive Assistant Sergio Molina, Chief of Staff Jim Reinhart and Northern Regional Supervisor Jac Charlier are no longer state employees. Elman declined to comment further, citing privacy rules regarding personnel decisions.
The changes come after recent struggles for the prison agency under Gov. Pat Quinn. The administration says it's keeping close tabs on the department following a controversial prisoner early release program implemented late last year.
In the run up to the Feb. 2 Democratic governor primary, Quinn found himself at the center of a firestorm surrounding the program after more than 1,700 inmates were released after serving just... [Read More]

PEKIN, Ill. -
A former inmate of the Federal Correctional Institute-Pekin alleges in letters to his mother that inmate Adam Montoya begged for medication while in excruciating pain for several days prior to his death on Nov. 13.
Randy Rader was transferred to a California medium-security prison shortly after the death of Montoya, 36, of Albuquerque, N.M., with no explanation for the transfer. He later learned the transfer was for disciplinary reasons, though he claims he did nothing wrong except push the issue about Montoya’s death.
Rader is not alone. Former Pekin prison inmate Jae Eads is now in a Pennsylvania prison. He too believes he was transferred because of his knowledge of what happened at the prison with Montoya, he said.
On Nov. 14, 2009, Rader wrote to his mother, Debbie Rader, in Wisconsin. He told his mother, “Look, something really bad happened here on 11-13-09. I’m going to give you this name (and prison ID) number. I want you to get Brandon... [Read More]

Just when you thought it was safe to fly....
BBC News - New York airport jets 'directed by child'
US officials are investigating how a child was apparently allowed to direct planes at New York's JFK airport - one of the country's busiest.
The probe comes after an audiotape caught the boy directing several pilots preparing for take-off last month.
In one exchange, the boy is heard saying: "JetBlue 171 contact departure." The pilot responds: "Over to departure JetBlue 171, awesome job."
The boy was apparently with his father - a certified air traffic controller.
The adult is later heard saying with a laugh: "That's what you get, guys, when the kids are out of school."
In another exchange, the child says: "MS 4-0-3, contact departure," and then... [Read More]
