    Attitude To Inmates

There are loads of threads on here talking about all the tricks that inmates and prisoners get up to and how bad they are but there are a fair number just doing their time or those who just end up being there by bad luck.

So far as I said before I've only been on the other side of the bars as an inmate but am hoping to put in my application when I get home in a couple of weeks. The days I spent in jail were probably the worst days in my life but eventually all charges were dropped and I could put it all behind me.

Where I was I never got treated real bad by COs but there were some who just treated me as another ****head in jail uniform who they wouldn't want to step on. There were others who were pretty cool and I could talk to and have a bit of a laugh with and would still be professional but would treat you as a human.

While I know that part of the job has to be to keep a distance between yourself and the inmates how much do you treat the inmate depending on his attitude and how he behaves or do you look on them (us) all as thugs who are getting what they deserve?

    Re: Attitude To Inmates

I treat all the inmates the same.. I treat them like a human... that is until they screw up.. then its game on. If I'm in the pods where the turds are... I tend to be mean. The unit I run, most just want to do thier time and dont cause a problem... I do get the occasional turd tho...game on

I treat inmates in a manner that thier attitude and good conduct merit, I treat them as they treat me. If I am approached with a yo c/o ! then He is getting ****. If I am approached with a excuse me c/o then I may go the extra inch for that guy. A lot of guys on here say they treat all inmates the same and I totally disagree with that practice. I am not going to treat a drunk driver, or a kid who sold some weed the same as a child molester or a gang banging murderer. There are guys who belong in jail and nowhere else and they dont deserve respect because they have none. There are also guys who maybe fell through the cracks in the justice system and while they did break the law, so do I, and so do you, and so does every person on here, maybe not to that extent but we do. But ofcourse the crime has very little to do with how I treat them, it all depends on how they treat me.

The inmates who are just doing their time, the ones who sleep all the time or watch tv some, the ones who are always laying on their bunks reading a book or writing letters, they are the ones who tend to stay under my radar and I don't give them too much of a hard time. The ones who are loud, the ones who always seem to be scheming, the ones who come up to my station telling me what I need to do, the ones who always seem to have some form of contraband when I search their cells, the ones who always try to distract me from something else, the ones who go "whoop, whoop" like a police siren when I go on my rounds to warn the inmates who are smoking or whatever to hide/get rid of their contraband, they are the ones who get the **** end of my stick.

That's all sounds fair enough if you take into account how they behave and react.

I just remember the guy who ended up doing my seach and he gave me a hard time for not doing things quick enough. It was all new to me and it was my first and only time in jail and he didn't cut me any slack for that - seemed like he wanted to have a go no matter what I did. He pulled me up for so many things it just made me worse. That first day there was really bad but it got a bit better after that

How I treat an inmate depands on the inmate. if an inmate comes to me and is respectful then that is what he gets back. If they want to come at me being stupid then I am on them like stink on sh**. I guess there is a reason the inmates call me little hitler.

Maybe he was trying to make you realize that jail is not the place you want to be! Maybe he actually knew that you were a first timer and wanted you to really think hard about coming back!!!:shotgun:
