I've been looking around but have been unable to locate an answer to this. I applied for a "On-Call" position at Coyote Ridge. I did the Video Assessment today. I'm curious how this whole On-Call thing actually works. If you're not worthless does it turn into a full-time gig? If so, how long can you expect to be on-call status before full-time? How many hours can you expect while on-call? Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Good article.

link: Female Guards on the Rise at Louisiana's Most Notorious Prison - WGNO

ANGOLA, LA—
When the sun sets at Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, the inmates and their guards are sent to the dorms. Warden Burl Cain says, "You think about it, you put a female in a dormitory and it has 90 inmates and 25% of them are aggravated rapists and one out of two is here for the life and the majority of them are lifers and lock her in, she doesn't have the key." Throughout the night, she keeps order.

Today nearly 50% of corrections officers at Angola are women: in the walk, in the watchtowers and on the worksites.

In warehouse 915, Lieutenant Samantha Angelle guards robbers, rapists and murderers. She says, “We do have to try harder, but you just have to stand your ground.” Her advice? Never show your weakness. From near gang-rapes to knife attacks and fights, it seems each female officer has her own terrifying tale. After one such instance Major Deborah Leonard hid inside her car and asked herself, “What are you doing here, what? Is this really what you want?”

For the 607 women who now work at Angola, the answer is yes.

At the Correctional Officer Training Academy, female cadets learn defense tactics in one class. Next door, Maj. Leonard discusses manipulation. It is comprehensive coursework, aimed at helping women handle some of the nation's most dangerous criminals. While you may assume weapons and defense training take precedent, in reality the will of these officers is what gets them through. Many don’t carry a gun, but rely on their inner strength and female intuition to keep the peace inside Angola’s razor wire and prison cells.

I'm just curious as I've tried to do some research regarding the issue, and can't find anything saying one way or the other. I know none of you are HR or anything but I would be grateful for your opinions.

I know that the DOC states it doesnt discriminate against "mental illness" but lets say, if you were Bipolar would you/have the chance to be DQ'd from the process? Or if you were on top of your meds would you be alright?

Just a concern of mine, thank you all!

I just found out yesterday after calling HR that I made the current certificate at my first location choice and was told that I will be notified of an interview date within the next couple of weeks.

Can those of you who have been hired by BOP ,or who have gone through/are going through the interview process tell me what your timeline looked like from interview to notification of conditional offer to start date? At the interview do you do the physical and UA or do you have to go back at a later date to do this, if you are given a conditional offer? When do you fill out the background paperwork? Wondering about logistics, how many times a person has to go back and forth in the interview process, as the location I chose is 6 hours from my home and I just started a new job this week with not much time off for this type of travel (but will somehow make it work if this opportunity presents itself). There is a BOP location 1.5 hours from my home (they are not hiring). Could I do any of the process there (physical, pee test?), if I get that far after the interview? I applied on the new 2012 announcement that came out in March.
Thanks!

Lets just speak in hypothetical terms here. I'm not a police officer or a CO, I'm a civilian.

I live in a large apartment complex in the shady side of town. Lets say I exit my apartment, and upon exiting I see a death threat written on my door in permanent marker. What do I do in that situation? Aside from calling the police, do I find somewhere to hide out? Would it be safe to stay in my apartment? The preference would be to stay in the apartment because i've worked so hard to maintain it and furnish it and to be torn away from it would be heart breaking, but if you don't think that's safe please feel free to say so.

The reason I bring this whole thing up is because a neighbor of mine received a threatening message in the form of someone writing on her door in permanent marker and I can't help but think, what if that happened to me? I guess I'm just an anxious person and I wouldn't know how to cope in that situation. I doubt i'm in any immediate danger because this happened to a neighbor of mine across the hall... I'm just wondering... What would I do in that situation?

And I figured, who'd know better then the fine men and women who put their lives on the line to keep our communitys safe :)

By the way my name is Snoopy! (like the dog from Charlie Brown) Nice to meet you all!

I would like to know how likely it is that I will be able to find a job as a corrections officer in the New York City area.

I am 51.
I am 6'1", 200 pounds, run about 20 miles per week, benchpress about 180
I worked as a computer programmer for over 20 years until losing my job 2 years ago.
I have a GED, but currently no college.

I have heard that NYCDOC is hiring however I have no idea how competative that is.

Is this a field worth looking into, or is it a situation where there are 500 applicants for each opening and my chances are slim to none?

I understand that to apply I'll need some college credits, which could cost some money.
