Bureau Publishes Final Issue of MMH

    End of an Era:

    Bureau Publishes Final Issue
    of MMH

This issue, May 8, 2017, will be the last issue of the Monday Morning Highlights (MMH) published by the Bureau of Prisons.

MMH started in the 1960s as a typewritten newsletter mailed to every institution as a way of communicating with all staff from headquarters.

MMH grew from an internal informational memorandum between Central Office and the institutions into a multi-paged newsletter with photos, and a distribution that extended far outside the Department of Justice. With the advent of the internet and digital communications, much of the MMH content can now be disseminated via our public website.

The President has challenged agencies to become more lean and efficient. We have been directed to streamline operations, reduce the workforce, and identify cost-savings opportunities.

Publishing MMH is labor-intensive, and much of the information is already available through other means. Moving forward, the Bureau will leverage available technology, including social media and www.bop.gov, to disseminate information to the public.

I only read it to find out staff I know are retiring or getting promoted. I'm sure the BOP won't forget us retirees. (Sarcasm X 10)

I could think of 50 different ways to cut costs and keep the MMH...most of them would involve eliminating the positions of people who make these stupid decisions.

Re: Bureau Publishes Final Issue of MMH

Most state systems have eliminated their employee newsletters long ago due to budget issues. Things are only going to get tighter before they get better. The BOP itself has become much leaner the past ten years.
"Give me six lines written by the most honorable of men, and I will find an excuse in them to hang him."

    Cardinal Richelieu

"A fish rots from the head down."

Some forgotten state prison administrator in reference to poorly led prison agencies.

The Bald Man and the Fly

There was once a Bald Man who sat down after work on a hot
summer's day. A Fly came up and kept buzzing about his bald pate,
and stinging him from time to time. The Man aimed a blow at his
    little enemy, but his palm came on his head instead;
again the Fly tormented him, but this time the Man was wiser and
    said:

"You will only injure yourself if you
    take notice of despicable enemies."

I never had much use for MMH, but I was irritated when they cut out the daily Newsclips email. It was obvious that it was eliminated because they reported even the negative news.

Back in my day, they didn't have the internet and all information was received in a weekly bulletin, which I guess became the MMH and we liked it that way! 23 institutions nationwide, now there's what, 4 times that?

It was no longer a thing when I was a rookie, but the old phrases tend to hang on for years.
