Alabama Senate votes to allow church to form police dept.

    Apr 11, 2017 06:20 PM
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Senate has voted to allow a church to form its own police force.

Lawmakers on Tuesday voted 24-4 to allow Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham to establish a law enforcement department.

The church says it needs its own police officers to keep its school as well as its more than 4,000 person congregation safe.

Critics of the bill argue that a police department that reports to church officials could be used to cover up crimes.

The state has given a few private universities the authority to have a police force, but never a church or non-school entity.

Police experts have said such a police department would be unprecedented in the U.S.

A similar bill is also scheduled to be debated in the House on Tuesday.

Different but more os a security mission to me. Since it is not a municipal, county state or federal agency they wouldn't be covered by LEOSA

I have been a member of a couple of churches over the years and in different states that had established security teams that were used during church services. My last church we had one guy would be in a room that monitored cameras at all the entrances and parking lot(s). Other guys would patrol the hallways and vacant rooms. We had walkie-talkies and a couple of the guys had concealed weapons (with KY CCDW). It was an approved group by the church and deacons (one of the deacons was the head of the team) and we actually had a Use of Force policy and our general SOP. A few of the guys were LEO's and a couple were retired LEO's. Two of our guys were KY CCDW instructors.

This was cheered by people who worry that Muslim immigrants will mean Sharia law. They couldn't recognize irony if you highlighted it in the dictionary.

There is actually a lot of precedent for this, though. In most states, private universities have their own police forces, as do public universities.

In my world, no government agency would have its own separate LE department, and of course private groups would be out of the question. (Just to be clear, that's only true as long as government holds a monopoly on legal violence; otherwise, I would prefer that all "policing" be done privately.) School districts, libraries, and any other non-municipal agency should have to call the locals for police assistance.
No disclosure needed: I'm now a private citizen, and free to speak my mind!

Re: Alabama Senate votes to allow church to form police dept.

At my church the board hired a private firm that was established by a retired LEO. They do basically all the law enforcement duties that they did as active LEO's, patrol parking lots, direct traffic when service lets and during the week for the school.
