Inmate Recovering After Shooting
May 7, 2008

An inmate at the Big Sandy Federal Prison in Martin County is recovering after a shooting.

Officials say last Thursday, two inmates were assaulting another inmate and wouldn't stop when officers tried to separate them. Investigators say an officer fired a warning shot, and it hit one of them.

Officials say the inmate is being treated at a local hospital. The prison is on lockdown while they continue their investigation.

Courthouse shooter had ammo, gas mask
(Last updated: May 8, 2008 4:28 PM)

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities still don't know why a man opened fire inside a downtown courthouse lobby, but the weapons he carried in a backpack suggest he was in for a fierce fight before he was killed.

Detectives said they found 79 rounds of ammunition, an extra gun magazine, a lengthy fighting knife and a gas mask in the belongings that Glen Lee Powell brought to the courthouse shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Bailiffs shot and killed Powell, 30, after he fired at least two shots from a Sig Sauer semiautomatic handgun at them, Pinellas County sheriff's Sgt. Jim Bordner said at a news conference Thursday. He said only about 12 seconds elapsed from when Powell entered the lobby until the gunfight ended. No one else was seriously injured.

While detectives scoured Powell's truck and other belongings in search of a motive, his mother... [Read More]

Snipes' attorneys to appeal tax conviction, 3-year sentence
May 07, 2008 - 5:21 PM - by SaltyDog

OCALA, Fla. (AP) — Lawyers for Wesley Snipes have filed notice to appeal his federal tax conviction.

The 45-year-old action star was sentenced to three years in prison last week on three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file his income tax returns. He will remain free until he's ordered to surrender by the federal Bureau of Prisons.

Snipes' attorneys filed the notice Thursday for the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They indicated last week they would do so. The two-page filing doesn't specify the nature of their argument.

Snipes was acquitted of five other counts in February, including two felonies.

His films include the "Blade" trilogy and "Jungle Fever."

Prison care for mentally ill criticized at FDC Honolulu
May 07, 2008 - 5:12 PM - by SaltyDog
The Federal Detention Center in Honolulu has come under criticism for the way it handles the medication for incoming mentally troubled inmates and the lack of a psychiatrist on the staff.

Dr. Daryl Matthews, a Honolulu psychiatrist, said detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base have more access to psychiatric services than the center's inmates.

A center spokeswoman said the Honolulu facility will be hiring a part-time psychiatrist.

The Federal Detention Center here falls below the standard of medical care in the way it switches prescribed drugs for incoming mentally troubled inmates, according to a Honolulu mental health expert.

Psychiatrist Dr. Daryl Matthews said the switches, made without a psychiatric evaluation of the prisoner, and the lack of a staff psychiatrist are a "major problem" that warrants a review by federal authorities.

Matthews, who was assigned to help evaluate mental health... [Read More]

La. warden says his prison has an unpaid guard: a black bear

The way the warden sees it, the more than 400-pound black bear living in the middle of the sprawling Louisiana State Penitentiary is an extra layer of security. "I love that bear being right where it is," Warden Burl Cain said Monday. "I tell you what, none of our inmates are going to try to get out after dark and wander around when they might run into a big old bear. It's like having another guard at no cost to the taxpayer."

The bear was first seen by an inmate crossing a road in the prison on Friday. It was taking a stroll near the center of the state's only maximum security prison, which is about 115 miles northwest of New Orleans. Most of the roughly 28-square-mile prison is run as a farm, but about 5 1/2 square miles is mostly untouched piney woods.

Prison workers measured the bear's footprints, which were six inches in diameter,... [Read More]
